4 Tips to Help Children Sleep While Traveling

Traveling can be extremely fun and exciting, but with kids in tow it may prove to be a little more stressful.

This is why it is so important to ensure that your kids get adequate sleep while traveling.

Without enough sleep, the grown-ups and the children are likely to be in a bad mood and it could lead to a disastrous vacation.

The problem is that traveling really breaks us away from our routines.

It is a different atmosphere, and sometimes you tend to stay out later.

Children really thrive on routine and familiarity helps them to feel safe.

Without their typical bedtime routine, and the familiar comfort of their own bedroom, they may not be able to get as much sleep as their bodies require.

If you want to have a fun time while you are traveling, without the constant bickering of tired children who haven’t gotten enough rest, you have come to the right place.

We have some tried and true tips that can help your kiddos get some sleep, even if you are away from the comforts of home.


#1 – Try to Stay On a Routine

Vacation tends to turn your whole routine upside down.

Maybe you have a late evening flight that will keep your kids up past bedtime, or perhaps you just tend to sleep later and stay up later while you are away.

The truth is, there are a lot of different ways that our routines are affected while we are on vacation.

Sticking as close to your routine as you can will not only help your children to stay on the right track with their sleep patterns while you are traveling, but also help them adjust quicker when you get back home.

Start by planning activities earlier in the day.  Set a time to be back to your hotel by a decent hour.

Allow some wind down time, because children don’t tend to fall asleep right away.

This doesn’t mean you have to stick strictly to your at home routine, but just try to not veer too far off.

The closer you can stick to it, the easier it will be for you and your children to get the most sleep possible.

#2 – Ensure They Have a Comfortable Place to Sleep

Being comfortable helps to promote a better night of sleep – not only for us adults, but for the kids as well.

This means having a comfortable mattress to sleep on, with comfortable pillows and a comfortable room temperature.

Aside from having a comfortable place to sleep, it may also help to bring along some of their normal comfort items from home.

Does your child have a favorite teddy bear?  Do they love a certain pillow, or prefer a certain blanket?  Bringing some familiarity from home can help them to get more comfortable.

A night light can also help to keep the environment similar to home.

If they sleep with a night light at home, consider bringing it along to help them be more comfortable.

It also increases their safety if they get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom or get a drink of water.


#3 – Save the Road Trips for Night Time

Another great way to ensure that your children get a good amount of sleep while traveling is to plan long road trips for night time.

They may even sleep in the car, giving you some peace and quiet along the way.

An added plus is that you won’t have to hear ‘are we there yet?’ over and over again.

It may be a good idea to plan to leave in the afternoon, so that much of the trip will be after dark so that they can get to sleep.

Often times, kids can fall asleep in the car and be moved to a bed without even waking up.

The downfall to night travel is that often the parents don’t get enough sleep.

Even though the kids may be resting peacefully, be sure to stop early enough so that you don’t get tired while driving.


#4 – Steer Clear of Any Sugar Within a Few Hours of Bedtime

We have all heard the ways that sugar can affect kids, and one of the many effects is that it tends to keep them up at night.

It makes them hyper and gives them more energy.  It is always a good idea to limit sugar intake within a few hours before bed.

This is not only something that you will want to do when you are traveling, but also a good practice to have when you are at home.

If they are used to a bedtime snack, then consider a healthy, sugar free treat instead of something that is packed with sugars.
